The Enduring Connections Campaign is a volunteer-based project which seeks to build capacity of The OASIS Townsville facility in providing suicide prevention and enhanced well-being support to ex-ADF members, through a volunteer base of those with lived experience in defence and/or mental health.

It has been identified that many veterans who are suffering from injury or illness and/or social isolation are lacking pleasure and purpose in their lives. It is hoped that volunteering will assist in providing a sense of purpose, decrease social isolation and enhance well-being.

This Campaign seeks to provide foundations, create connections and a sense of purpose by engaging ex-ADF members in a voluntary capacity, trained as Veteran Welfare Advocates. In doing so, this group will support their fellow ex-ADF community in their transition, connection and adaption to life in Townsville with purpose and meaning (well-being).

How will it happen?

1) Veteran Welfare Advocates & Veteran Compensation Advocates at The OASIS Townsville

  • The identification of ten suitable volunteers to be trained as Veteran Welfare Advocates, followed by suitable candidates to be trained as Veteran Compensation Advocates, to operate from The OASIS Townsville (TOTL).

2) Volunteer Force

  • The creation of a ‘Volunteer Force’ of ex-ADF members who can provide assistance to the local and wider community in times of need (flood, cyclone, fire and other disasters). This group will receive emergency relief up-skilling and work alongside the SES, Team Rubicon.

3) The establishment of Advocacy Development Training (ADTP) and establishing Communities of Practice (CofP) to provide holistic case management in assisting transition to life in Townsville, post defence.

4) Mapping transitions of ex-ADF members to ascertain where the interactive points exist and identifying support needed with practical, psychological and cultural adjustments to positive and successful transition.

5) Events, forums, community grants facilitated through The OASIS Townsville.
